Throughout recorded history and possibly before humans had an infatuation with time, apparently never having enough of it. From Stonehenge and sundials to pocket watches and alarm clocks, the old clocks and new all share the same common goal of helping people know what time it is.

The star sirius appears near the sun every 365 days. The ancient Egyptians developed a calendar knowing this in the year 4236 BC. Old clocks, many made of sticks, were based on this calendar and lunar and tidal acitivity and were operated manually by moving the stick to align with the sun. Other indicators to help gauge the annual time included the flooding of the nile river.

During their brief popularity sundials told time based on the rotation of the Earth, but cloudy days and periods of darkness made them useless. Many primitive timepieces relied on the shifting of the sun to tell time and had to be modified seasonally to be better understood.

Alarm Clocks With One Setting

The first mechanical alarm clock was developed in 1787 in New Hampshire but had one major glitch. The bell on the alarm could only go off at four in the morning. It was not until 1876 that old clocks with an adjustable alarm were developed. The patent was held by Seth Thomas and is the basic for many mechanical alarms used today.

Before 1912 there were only two possible operating systems for old clocks. They either utilized a pendulum’s mechanical action or they kept time by winding a main spring. In 1912 the Warren Clock Company began to produce battery operated clocks. The first wrist watch was invented in the early 17th century when a French mathematician attached a string to a pocket watch. Wrist watches are now the most popular timepieces in the world.

The weights used in many old clocks made them difficult to move around. Grandfather style clocks were used frequently, and then a smaller version was created that could fit on top of a table. Throughout time, various sizes and shapes of clocks have been made to satisfy people’s interest in time.

For people with internet sites, you almost certainly know what a “host” is. It is a company that offers a location, or address, online where your site lives. To paraphrase, just like a physical business needs an address, so does a site. you cannot have an internet site and just “stick it up” on the internet. Let’s take a look at some common issues we frequently have with hosting corporations : – You can never find a person to talk to.

They could have a 24-hour buyer service line open, but you can never get thru to a genuine person.

In other words, weak customer service is a major problem with the bulk of hosting firms these days. Solution: I lately had the pleasure of being introduced to HostGator hosting provider, and to assert I was impressed is a massive understatement.

Service one: website hosting I am not talking about one of those Free accounts where they throw their own ad in everytime somebody visits your website.

I am talking about a premium, ad free web hosting package with your own domain name. Lots of space and able to handle lots of traffic. Free sites that ad their own banner are not extraordinarily pro in most races eyes and turns them off fast.

At the same time you are building a catalogue of folks who you can keep in regular contact with and send special offers to. Eventually, might have loads of different messages immediately being sent with your offers. This requires a professional web hosting service.

History of Mistletoe

The mistletoe, native to the forests of Northern Europe, is a parasite implant on deciduous and evergreen trees which produces yellowish flowers and waxy white berries. Its closest relative in North America has yellowish flowers and waxy white berries, and is also commonly known as mistletoe. Notably, it is the official floral emblem of the State of Oklahoma.

The name mistletoe came about from two Anglo – Saxon words: mistel which means dung and tan which means twig. And so, mistletoe quite literally means dung on a twig. Mistletoe infers that life can spring up from dung. This leeching plant grows and thrives on the dung of birds on the branches of trees. As a result, mistletoe became the symbol of vivacity and fertility.

The Christmas and New Year tradition of embracing for the bashful and kissing for the brazen under a sprig of mistletoe dates back to olden Britain. Also, it was prevalent among the Druids who were the learned class of the Celts.

The Druids celebrated the beginning of winter ( winter solstice ) by collecting mistletoe and burning it as a sacrifice to their pagan gods. To ensure a year of good faith, peace, and familial harmony, they hung sprigs of mistletoe around their homes. Twigs of the evergreen displayed visibly outside their homes welcomed relatives, friends, neighbors and weary travelers and the mistletoe within encouraged them to embrace shamelessly. Feuding parties or foes who happened to meet under trees that contained mistletoe were required to lay aside their weapons and settle their differences.

The Druids believed that the mistletoe had healing properties. It was often prescribed for female infertility and as an antidote for poisons of all kinds. The gathering of mistletoe was a ceremony by the highest priests using gold knives. Such a carefree rite of harvesting mistletoe is dramatically portrayed in Bellinis opera Norma.

The Celtic Druids were not the only people who ascribed so many marvelous attributes to the mistletoe, the Scandinavians, who called it mistilteinn; also believed that it was the plant of peace, the plant of hope and the plant of harmony. The Scandinavian lore claims that the mistletoe belonged to Frigga, the Scandinavian star of inclination, and the embracing and kissing custom is thought to have come from this notion.

Mistletoe was also used for a decorative green in the Roman Empire during their feasts of Natalis Solis Invicti and Saturnalia. Due to its ties to idolatrous festivities, the Church banned the use of mistletoe when Christmas on December 25 was officially recognized as the birth of Christ in the the fourth century.

As an alternative to the mistletoe, the holly was ironically proposed even thought it too had strong associations with atheist rituals. Nevertheless, the hollys white flowers were to signify the purity of Christ, the acerbic leaves were to symbolize the thorns in Christs crown and the red berries as drops of His blood. Thus, the Holly became a Nativity tradition, but, surprisingly enough, the churchs ban on mistletoe which was in effect throughout the Middle Ages still persists today.

Excess weight is often referred to by the term obesity. This is a condition where the body accumulates more fat than is being processed or burned by the normal metabolism. In many cases, this can be genetic but in most, there is obviously a diet problem that needs to be reconsidered. Obesity is measured in what is called body mass index or BMI according to the fitness and medical circles. BMI is arrived at by dividing weight by height and then squaring the result. A BMI of 25-29kg/m is considered overweight.

Check out our Nutrisystem Weight Loss Program Review Site – Click Here

Obesity is dangerous. Medical research shows that the chances of a heart attack are exponentially increased the higher the BMI goes. People who are overweight also struggle with a myriad of other complications. For instance, obese people also have to deal with a low self-esteem because the general mass media pushes the image of the slim model as the ideal. Clothes are also had to find and one has to shop at special stores. More problems include sleep irregularities and the risk of a stroke.

How does diet help? Researchers and nutritionists report that there is a correlation between weight loss and dieting. Education is key. Reading the labels when shopping is recommended. There are some foods which have a higher calorie content than others and knowing this will put one in the right track. By education, we also mean that you should familiarize yourself with the food pyramid. You can easily access this at the food pyramid website which is supported by the Food and Drug Administration.

Dieting does not always mean starving yourself. It can mean that you are taking precautions as to what you eat. That means cooking with oils such as olive oil which has healthy fats and does not encourage fat accumulation. Animal fats should be avoided if possible.

K-State, Wichita State collaborative research studies wheat bran from different wheat varieties, effect on suppressing colon cancer

MANHATTAN — We’ve heard the conflicting information: Wheat bran can reduce the risk of colon cancer in humans; wheat bran does not reduce the risk in humans.

But which one is true?

Both, sort of.

In the mid-1990s, grain science nutritionists at Kansas State University discovered that bran from one variety of wheat actually suppressed cancer in laboratory tests, while bran from another wheat variety did not.

According to Ronald Madl, director of bioprocessing and industrial value added programs with K- State’s department of grain science and industry, the confusion set in because the resulting medical literature really did not appreciate the genetic diversity in wheat — that not all wheat bran is the same.

“As a consequence, medical literature that followed the initial work sometimes said that wheat bran did suppress cancer,” Madl said. “Other medical literature said it did not suppress cancer.”

In a cooperative effort that picked up where that previous research left off, Madl and other researchers from K-State — including Carol Klopfenstein, professor emeritus of grain science and industry, Delores Takemoto, professor of biochemistry, and Weiqun Wang, assistant professor of human nutrition — joined with John Carter, associate professor of physical therapy at Wichita State, and discovered the diversity of phytochemicals in wheat bran. They tested about 120 varieties, all with different levels of antioxidants, from very high to very low. Further studies showed wheat bran with a higher antioxidant content demonstrated a potential to suppress cancer cells.

Madl said in subsequent testing on human cancer cells, the bran from high antioxidant wheat varieties either actually killed some of the cancer cells or stopped their growth; the medium and low antioxidant varieties had less of or no effect — the cancer cells kept growing like normal.

Further testing has shown that wheat high in antioxidants demonstrated a significant suppression in both size and number of tumors, while intermediate levels of wheat antioxidants experienced an intermediate level of cancer activity.

“Since then, we have been trying to move this research to the next stage, understanding which particular compounds are responsible for this benefit,” Madl said. “Antioxidant activity is expressed by a lot of chemical compounds, but that doesn’t mean that all antioxidants express that same beneficial, biological effect. Now, we’re trying to determine which antioxidants are actually responsible for cancer suppression.”

Madl said K-State wheat breeders would like to enhance the levels of antioxidants in wheat.

“The long-term opportunity is that we could produce new wheat varieties with higher levels of antioxidants, and then carry out research to show that these varieties can reduce cancer risk,” he said.

Madl said that once researchers have determined the wheat bran varieties with enhanced levels of antioxidants, clinical studies could be considered for humans to demonstrate if wheat bran could reduce the risk of colon cancer.

Madl said K-State research is currently focused on testing methodology. Development of more rapid screening methods for antioxidants in wheat could make the screening process for wheat breeders, as well as making the wheat selection process for food processors, quicker and more feasible.

With the recent and ever increasing rise in global population, we are confronted by a problem that is getting out of control. This is the problem of obesity, something that is becoming more and more common all of the time. There are a multitude of reasons why this is a growing concern. One big reason is that we lead busy lives stripping us of the ability to eat in a healthy manner. Throughout our day we trade fast food for wholesome meals. Secondly, our busy schedules do not allow us the time to really exercise as we should. With our lives the way they are it is difficult to begin a healthy weight loss plan. The following method may be just what your looking for.

With this healthy weight loss plan diet you will need to plan out what you do to make it effective. Just a heads up, if you give up easy then this is not the plan for you. This plan is a two step process that begins with a cleanse and ends with a healthy way of eating. If you follow this plan you will lose fat quickly and keep it off as long as you abide by the plan.

The best way to start this particular healthy weight loss plan is with the master cleanse. There is plenty of material that is available on this particular fast. This cleanse can be performed in a 3 to 10 day time frame. I personally have experienced a ten day master cleanse which helped to clear my body of all of its food addictions. This will put you in a much better position to be able to choose healthier foods once it is complete.

Once the fast is complete, you’ll notice that you and your body feel much better and will want to continue this great feeling. To keep your body feeling as it does you’ll now want to undertake a raw food diet. Basically this diet states to eat organic vegetables and fruit whenever you feel like it on a daily basis. What you should really focus on is eating every 2 to 3 hours. Following this schedule, your body’s metabolism will increase in efficiency enabling it to burn fat at an elevated rate.

Something else you want to consider is integrating high intensity interval training. The way that you do this is by doing some form of exercise, typically running for one minute. After the minute is up you walk for two minutes. Repeat this process for eight to ten times until you reach thirty minutes in total. If you do this along with eating properly, you will be amazed with the amount of weight that you can actually lose in the span of one month.

Kung fu is loosely translated as “sustained effort or skill.” It is made up of hundreds of unique styles including northern and southern styles and tai chi. Within all the various styles, there are similar traits that run through all of them and brand them as a style of kung fu. Almost every discipline begins with foundational stances and movements which act as a springboard from which a practitioner may develop and learn new styles and form. As training continues and the student progresses, forms become more difficult and push the practitioner to become fluid and dexterous giving them the ability to perform magnificent moves with speed and strength. A distinguishing characteristic of kung fu is the variety of martial arts supplies and equipment that they use.

Two Different Kung Fu Styles

Wing Chun kuen kung fu one of a variety of martial arts disciplines, whose origins can be traced back to Southern China, and when compared to other well known martial arts styles, Wing Chun is a relative newcomer. Wing Chun’s origin is commonly thought to be from a female who was a protege to a Buddhist nun. Wing Chun is commonly believed to be a “soft” style, but is in reality blends both hard and soft techniques. To explain the term “hard” we refer to the concept of meeting force with force, and the “softness” of wing Chun comes from the evasive moves it teaches.

The rough translation of Wing Chun kuen is: wing Chun means “beautiful spring time” and kuen means “fist” or “fist fighting style.” However, many people refer to the style simply as “wing chun”, removing the kuen. It is rumored that “wing chun” was developed by observing a battle between a snake and a crane.

Shaolin mok-gar is among one of the original household disciplines of kung fu. Originating in Southern China, mok-gar is well-known for its focus and development of kicking techniques. The practice itself is not restricted to just kicking, and in fact the use of a full range of weapons is also part of the system. This creates a flexibility of attack and defense that typifies the basic concepts of Chinese martial arts. The ability to express yourself completely in the attempt to be victorious in your endeavor. Because the ultimate goal of mok-gar is to prevail, devotees understand that placing restrictions on particular movements and skills could potentially put one at a disadvantage.

Shaolin mok-gar kuen, is believed to have been developed by Mok-Da-Si, a midget who dwelt in a Southern Chinese Shaolin monastery. The discipline was originally called shaolin chuen and was taught to his family. The name is rumored to have been changed sometime around the third generation and was renamed mok-gar to honor its founder. If you are thinking about having Chicago laser hair removal you are probably looking forward to saying goodbye to all those messy and often painful techniques such as waxing and shaving. But you’re probably wondering if it is the right treatment for you. Here are some things to consider before deciding to make the move to permanent Chicago laser hair removal.

First, you should be aware that it may take a number of treatment sessions in order to do a complete job. This depends on the size of the area you are getting treated. Small areas can often be treated in one session, but larger areas such as your arms, back or chest (for men) may take several months to complete.

During treatments the treated skin should not be exposed to sunlight. So, for example, when removing hair from your arms, for a period of time immediately following your laser hair removal treatments you will have to wear a long sleeve shirt while in the sun.

Also be aware that Chicago laser hair removal is a permanent process. In many cases this is exactly what you want. But there may be some situations where it is not what you want. The bottom line is that the process is permanent. Permanent hair removal means permanent. In the large majority of cases the hair that is removed with laser hair removal will not grow back.

Among other things that means you should think your choice through carefully. It is probably not wise to have hair removed from places where having no hair may go out of fashion. For example, having your eyebrows done may be a decision you regret later. Having leg or underarm hair removed, on the other hand, is not something likely to come back to haunt most women.

Where laser hair removal is most beneficial is where you find yourself constantly removing it. The messy and time-consuming procedures you have been used to for years will suddenly become things of the past.

For example, women who do not want hair on their face, under arms, legs, and arms would benefit from the process because they would never have to shave again. Men could be more confident of their appearance by getting rid of unsightly back or chest hair. Doing this can be quite a relief and make you feel like a kid again.

After you have carefully considered all the pros and cons, and you are completely confident that tossing the razor is an attractive idea, then do one more thing. Take the next step and consult with a experienced provider to ensure that your hair and skin type are compatible with the laser process.

Once you get the green light from the appropriate professionals, go ahead and begin your treatments, confident that smooth and hairless skin is just a few days or weeks away.

Please note: Always consult with the appropriate medical professional before following any advice related to your health.
