Drawing up a plan of action needs to be at the top of your priority list when preparing for house training a puppy, because it can only improve the process of the transition for your new puppy from his happy and playful home to his new and unrecognizable surroundings. It is a very stressful and worrying event for a puppy when his mother and littermates suddenly disappear, and then is suddenly moved to strange and confusing habitat where there is nothing but unfamiliar people and strange smells.
Even adult dogs are somewhat bewildered by the upheaval when moved to new homes. Regardless of their age, your new dog has no idea what awaits in his future; all he knows is that he is in a strange and somewhat frightening place.
It may not be something that you can achieve but, an ideal plan would be to visit your puppy or dog at his current home. The benefit of taking this approach is that when you begin to look at, ways to train a puppy you’ll find he’s much more eager to learn being that you’re good friends already. If this is not practical, you could ask the old owner for something from the dog’s bed, such as a cushion or familiar toy or pretty much anything with the smell of his old home and help reassure him and survive the feeling of having nothing familiar in his life.
Pretty much everybody agrees that the best time to introduce your puppy to his new home is when you can give him several days on undivided attention. You need to be at home all day.. A holiday period – a long weekend – or even take a few days off work. He’ll settle down a lot quicker if you’re there with him 24-7. You need to have at least a couple of days at home and go a long way to beating his home sickness and stress of leaving his friends.
Just as parents prepare for the arrival of a new baby where we buy all the things we’ll need for the babies needs, training a puppy should be exactly the same. You should do the same for your new family member.
