Well, I haven’t so much had time to speak on my blog half as often as I would’ve liked, owing to the fact that I have been helping my Dad fuel his super nutball midlife crisis. Okay, some would argue it’s not as far gone as it could be. Basically how he did it was to get himself dressed up like he was Fonzie or something, and storm over to my apartment and casually inform me, in his “coolest” tone of voice: “Come on in, son, we are gonna start looking for some classic Mustangs for sale. Next thing I know he & I were off to a couple of those weird vintage car sales lots that I’m always mostly convinced are not exactly legit, and I stare in wonder this wild old guy made out a check right there on the spot, for an unnaturally sparkly classic mustang. I mean, it really is an impressive piece of machinery. It had a great sound too.

There’s a reason why I put about that sound in a past tense. It sounded amazing until it rendered itself silent. As children grow out of their little pants and are ready to begin their teens, many parents wonder if they should continue with the homeschooling program. They fear that colleges may not give equal opportunities to a child educated at home.

Many fears of this kind were put to rest when 2 homeschooled boys got admission into Harvard. Harvard does not require a high school diploma for gaining admission to their degree program. Many colleges are more interested in the knowledge and behavior of the homeschooled children rather than their high school diplomas. Admission requirements may vary. While some colleges require the child to appear for the SAT, others may need a general equivalency diploma. And some may not care for any tests at all. It is common to come across parents who frantically try to shift out their homeschool children to high schools because they fear unavailability of college admissions. But college admissions are open to all educated individuals, regardless of whether they are educated at home or at a public school.

If you are concerned that you can’t teach advanced courses, such as AP Physics or AP Calculus, or you don’t have the skills to teach a great composition class, some private high schools offer a homeschool support program that allows homeschool groups to sign up for one or two classes with very qualified teachers. I’d like to make a suggestion for a vacation destination where you can find a great deal of variety in the type of local attractions offered.  Everybody has different goals for their summer travel.  Some of us want to visit Disneyland and some just want to relax on the beach.  Others love to see historical sites and still others love to play golf.

Summer California actually offers activities in all of these categories.  There are many golf courses between the Pacific Ocean and Palm Desert.  And, of course, you’ll find plenty of beach action for sun worshipping.

Another obvious destination is the Disneyland Resort, which includes Downtown Disney and Disney’s California Adventure (by the way, Disney is spending like a billion dollars on a major renovation of California Adventure over the next several years).

Speaking of a cultural melting pot, Southern California is a concoction of people and cultures from around the world.  There is a particularly strong presence from Pacific Rim countries, but Europe, Asia and Africa are likewise well represented (not so many folks from Antarctica).

You’ll find quite a number of ethnic communities scattered throughout Southern California, and worth a visit in your summer travel activities.  The first community that comes to mind is Chinatown, just north of the Los Angeles central business district.  Just to the east of downtown is Little Tokyo.  Koreatown lies on the west side of the 110 Freeway.

Take time out of your schedule to drive down to Orange County to visit downtown Santa Ana, portions of which will remind you of a medium-sized city in Mexico.  Nearby Little Saigon offers shopping and dining with a Vietnamese and Southeast Asia influence.  There are no-doubt many other ethnic area in the Southern California melting pot.
