Whether you are an absolute beginner or if you studied when you were a child and gave it up, to begin playing the piano or the keyboards you will need to take some type of lessons. Which ever applies to you the method of learning how to play will be similar.

Of the multiple different forms of teaching there are a lot of similarities common to them all. Even if you are learning using electronic keyboards instead of a normal piano, the lessons you will get will be the same. Most students would like to learn how to read music and play a few classical pieces but they will probably also be interested in learning some contemporary music, pop songs or perhaps even Jazz. In many cases the beginner might also be interested in accompanying other instrumentalists or singers.

All of this may sound a little ambitious for a complete beginner but you really need to know your direction right from the very start. Within a relatively short period you will find that you can achieve all of the above.

There is a piano teaching method that I really love which is used by a home study course called ‘Piano For All’. I recently wrote a review for this course and will let you know my impressions.Fist off you are shown how to find all of the notes on the keyboard. This is worked through very quickly and then you are taught how to play an easy melody using all of your fingers. This tune is written in musical notation and as a simple keyboard diagram

This is only the first part of the first lesson. Now you get shown three notes with which you are able to play a basic chord. You produce the chord sound by playing it to the easy rhythm they teach you. Next you are shown how to play the first note of the chord with your other hand only a little further down the keyboard which forms the bass line. They give you a rhythm for the bass line and suddenly you find yourself playing a musical phrase that sounds good and isn’t difficult to play at all.

When you have this feeling easy to play, which will be almost straight away, you are then shown two or three more simple basic chords. Now you know a few chords you can play them changing from one to another in order and you will realize that you are playing real piano songs or accompaniments. This is a great way to learn the piano as it can make you feel secure and gives you an appetite for learning more. Moving on through the beginners course you are taught some different rhythms and a few more tunes and chords. Very soon you find yourself advancing as a piano player and musician and with each lesson the playing sounds more and more authentic.

In my opinion this way of learning is one of the best as it encompasses playing all styles of music from classical to pop, rock, jazz and gospel. You also get taught how to read music and play by ear and as such is very effective.
