Incorporating both a recorder and a camera, a camcorder is a piece of equipment that relies on digital technology for capturing sound and image. It has become common practice to refer to the device as camcorder only. Another peculiarity of the digital video camcorder consists of the type of media used for data storage; a flash drive, a memory card or a built-in hard disk drive can be equally used here. Some types of equipments allow for the use of all these three media types hence the name of hybrid camcorders.

A modern digital video camcorder captures the image by focusing the light on the imager (sensor), and incidental light then gets transformed into an electrical signal. The digital video results from this electrical signal that becomes storable. Many professionals make a difference between the camera section (imager and optics) and the rest of the digital video camcorder. As for optical control, many devices include manual and automatic operational modes, so as to suit the user’s requirements.

From the iris or the aperture you regulate the light exposure, while with the zoom you control the angle of view and the focal length. The neutral density filter is one other feature available with a digital video camcorder. The functions are automatic, but many professionals choose to operate the optical functions manually.

The sensor or imager in the structure of modern digital video camcorder models is considered superior to the other methods of image capturing by the possibility of displaying colors better. Although the light capability is lower, the images will be clearer. Yet, the storage capacity of the digital camcorder should not be overlooked either. With digital devices you don’t have to worry about color changes or fading.

As for technical performance, statistics indicate that the Betacam so far offers the best digital formats for the editing of materials. Moreover, with digital connections, there are no bandwidth problems or the noise that usually affect analog recordings. If the storage unit is intact, digital storage has not limitations in terms of time. Yet, should a technical problem occur, the loss of archives is usually complete with any digital video camcorder.
