Looking for neem? Have you ever been looking for top quality neem products but did not know where to start? Neem based products are slowly becoming more widely available, but for now are for the most part only found on the web or in small beauty shops and specialty stores. These products are not easy to find, so it is easy to grab the first thing you stumble upon just because it says “this product contains neem oil”. Here are some quick tips that will help you make an educated choice before you actually purchase an inferior product.

Figure Out How The Neem Oil Was Extracted From The Seeds There are a couple of methods used to extract the neem oil from the neem tree seeds. As you might have already concluded, not all extraction process are to be trusted. The extraction process that produces the highest quality neem seed oil is called cold pressing. Cold pressing neem oil is the best, because most active compounds remain intact. It is also the oldest way to extract the oil. It is done with a mechanical device that squeezes the oil out of the seeds. Always make sure to buy only cold pressed neem oil where possible.

Steam extraction- this method uses hot water vapor and heat. Though this method gets more oil from the seeds than cold pressing, a lot of the active compounds in the neem oil are ruined due to the exposure to high heat.

This next technique is the one that most neem oil dealers use because it extracts the most oil. The method is called solvent extraction, and in most cases hexane (also known as gasoline) is the solvent of choice. Though this process extracts just about all of the oil from the neem seeds, the harsh chemicals kill nearly all of the active compounds in the neem oil. Besides this and the fact that the chemical being used is poisonous, it is preferable that you look for items that do not contain neem oil that was extracted using them.

Watch Out For Additives Nearly all bath and cosmetic products today contain chemicals to “enhance” them, so to speak. At the same time, some of these additives can actually cause adverse side effects. Two of the most common chemicals that may be in a lot of bath bath products are Lauryl Sulfates and Parabens. Lauryl Sulfates are commonly used as foam enhancers, because they are inexpensive and work pretty well. A lot of inexpensive neem oil and soap products contain these additives too. However, these chemicals are a known irritant. The US Food and Drug Administration asks developers of these products not to use them.

Parabens are preservatives, and though there has been no scientific evidence that they are potentially harmful, they are starting to be avoided by many. Some organizations feel they should be avoided for the sake of precaution.

Be Sure To Look For Certified Organic Ingredients Quite obviously, organic ingredients are always more desireable than non-organic ingredients. These are natural substances, and have not been exposed to potentially dangerous chemical compounds, fertilizers, plant growth regulators, pesticides or similar chemicals. Look for labels that list only organic ingredients. If a producer uses organic ingredients, they will always state this (it’s a selling point) somewhere on the packaging.
