The Shepherd Hut has come to be a desired designer item nowadays in the British isles. A rising number of well-off people are getting familiar with them and are buying them as trendy items for their home gardens.
Visually the genuine huts were not that pleasing to the eye. They were designed to be practical, to provide warmth and protection from the weather for shepherds who needed to tend to their flocks. But these days, reconditioned or new shepherds huts tend to be a little more pleasing on the eye.
In times past, back in the nineteenth century, shepherd huts were introduced to farms so that shepherds could be near to their flocks when required, for example in the springtime at lambing time. The huts in simple form were just wooden sheds on wheels.
During the lambing period, the shepherd would spend the early spring days and nights living in his hut with his sheep, watching his expectant ewes to ensure they were not distressed.
The shepherds huts would have windows to all sides for him to observe through, and would use stable doors for easy access. The hut itself would probably have a corrugated roof on top of a solid wooden frame, sat on four big wheels for movability.
On the inside the shepherd would have a basic bed and a cast iron stove for heating, cooking food and boiling hot water. It may have been simple, but it provided comfort and warmth through those chilly early spring evenings.
Today, with their painted exteriors, solid oak floors and decorated interiors, modern shepherds huts have become a must have accessory for the upmarket garden. They’re used as playhouses, workplaces and even vacation homes. It would appear the only folks who don’t want them is shepherds!
I imagine part of their fascination is they enable us to take a trip back to occasions gone by, times that although tough were simple and stress free. Whenever you are sat in your shepherds hut in the peace of your garden, with just a book for company, just what could possibly be more peaceful?
